Føllesdal er født i Boston i USA, har doktorgrad fra Harvard University, er norsk filosof og professor ved Universitetet i Oslo.
Føllesdal ble i 1991 Ph.d. på en avhandling om «The significance of National Boundaries for International Distributive Justice» ved Harvard University. Føllesdal er i dag professor i politisk filosofi ved det juridiske fakultet ved Universitetet i Oslo, hvor han har vært professor siden 1999, og er Co-Director for PluriCourts, et senter for forskning om internasjonale domstolers legitimitet.
I 2002-2003 ble han utnevnt som Fulbright New Century Scholar. Føllesdal ble i 2012 valgt inn i Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi. Videre er han redaktør for flere bokserier, deltar i flere forskningsprosjekter i EU og er jevnlig Visiting Scholar ved Harvard Center for European Studies.
